Nantucket Release Dates Explained
A release date can describe eligibility, a calculated sentence endpoint, a court-ordered event, or the time a person physically left a facility. Those are not interchangeable. Massachusetts Department of Correction records use Earliest Release Date, or ERD, for the earliest date a person may become eligible for release after applicable parole and sentence rules. ERD is not a promise that the person will leave on that day.
A pretrial detainee has no sentence-based date. Release may depend on recognizance, bail, a later hearing, dismissal, or another court order. If the person cannot meet the conditions, custody can continue to the next court event. For a sentenced person, the custodian calculates dates from the mittimus, which is the court's written commitment order, and from the sentence structure and allowable credits.

Find a Nantucket Inmate Release Date
Begin with the custodian, not a date calculator. Nantucket County has no conventional jail. A short local detention may end at the Nantucket Police Department, or the Nantucket Sheriff's Office may move the person to Barnstable County Correctional Facility. A state-prison sentence moves the search to MA DOC. Each system keeps a different part of the timeline.
- Identify the arresting agency, court, current or last facility, and whether the person was awaiting court or serving a sentence.
- For an NPD detention, request the local release or transfer date and time from Nantucket Police Public Records.
- For a BCCF sentence or transfer, ask BCSO for the release, transfer, and existing sentence-computation records. State that the case originated in Nantucket.
- Use the exact docket number in MassCourts to review bail, sentence, credit, dismissal, probation, warrant, and later court orders.
- For MA DOC custody, search the Massachusetts VINELink route for current status, then request the sentence listing, ERD, ERD Max, and release or discharge record from DOC when needed.
- Confirm the date and destination with the responsible custodian before planning travel or pickup.

Nantucket State Release Date Terms
The public-facing Massachusetts locator does not document a field called “Projected Release Date” or “Tentative Release Date.” The official administrative terms are ERD and Earliest Release Max Date. They are maintained in sentence computation, but the public VINELink instructions do not guarantee that either date appears on a result.
The MA DOC glossary defines these terms and also distinguishes parole, expiration of sentence, and discharge. A Nantucket County state-prison search should therefore use the locator for status, then use a DOC record request when an authoritative date computation is needed. Ask for an existing sentence listing or computation sheet rather than asking staff to create a new prediction.

Those definitions explain eligibility and maximum-term calculations. They do not turn an ERD into a guaranteed community release.
Nantucket Earned-Time Release Calculations
Sentence computation begins with the minimum and maximum terms, whether multiple terms run at the same time or one after another, and any pretrial custody credit. Later court orders, mandatory minimum rules, statutory exclusions, and qualifying program work can change the calculation. MA DOC checks and certifies its dates and can correct a system result when the underlying information is wrong.
Under M.G.L. c.127, §129D, a state prisoner may earn up to 7.5 days for each qualifying program or activity in a month, capped at 15 days per month. A house-of-correction prisoner may earn up to 5 days per qualifying program or activity, capped at 10 days per month. Specified completion credits may also apply under the statute, with additional conditions for house-of-correction terms.
These are ceilings, not automatic awards. The person must actually take part, complete the work as required, and meet competency standards. The statute also caps covered reductions of imposed minimum and maximum terms at 35 percent under its provisions. Other rules, mandatory terms, and the sentence itself still control.
Pretrial credit under c.127, §129B and the sentence-computation rules can also matter. BCCF must compute a county sentence from its own records. MA DOC cannot supply a reliable date for a person who never entered state-prison custody.
Note: Statutory credit ceilings describe what may be earned, not the deduction that any one Nantucket County person actually received.
Massachusetts Release Percentage Limits
Massachusetts' truth-in-sentencing reform changed offenses committed after June 30, 1994. It eliminated older statutory good time for those offenses and tied state-prison parole eligibility to the judicial minimum rather than older fraction points. A historical state report found that a 2002 post-reform release group served 85 percent or more, but that finding is not a universal current formula.
Do not multiply every Nantucket County sentence by 0.85. The correct date depends on the offense date, court judgment, mandatory provisions, minimum and maximum terms, consecutive or concurrent structure, custody credit, earned deductions, parole action, and any other hold. The actual sentence record must replace a rough percentage.
House-of-correction parole rules also differ from state-prison rules. Ordinary eligibility is generally one-half of the aggregate term or two years, whichever is shorter, subject to mandatory minimums and special sentence combinations. Eligibility means the Board may consider release. It does not require a grant.
Why Nantucket Release Dates Change
A date can move because the legal record changes or because a projected deduction is not earned. It can also remain technically correct for one sentence while another warrant, detainer, or jurisdiction prevents community return. The reason should be documented rather than guessed.

A date may also lag while staff receive and verify a court order. In Nantucket matters, transport between the island and mainland can affect where the final transaction occurs. The court's legal event and the custodian's exit time should be requested as separate facts.
Nantucket Release Date Record Sources
No single office owns the entire Nantucket County custody path. Nantucket Police records the island lockup and a local release or transfer. The Nantucket Sheriff's Office handles transport and may document the handoff, but it does not operate a conventional jail. BCSO owns the BCCF incarceration and county sentence computation. MA DOC owns state-prison computation after a transfer into its jurisdiction.
Ask each custodian for existing records within a narrow date range. Useful fields include the booking or commitment identifier, admission time, court and committing agency, release or transfer time, release type, destination, sentence listing, applied credits, and certificate of discharge if one exists. A focused request reduces same-name mistakes and makes it easier for the records officer to locate the right transaction.
If two records show different dates, first determine whether they describe different events. A judge may order release before the facility completes processing. BCCF may record a transfer date while MA DOC records a later admission. The court docket may show a disposition date that is not the actual exit time. Keep the source and event label attached to every date.
Nantucket Release Date and Destination
Massachusetts release data can mark a change of legal status even while the person remains incarcerated. A person may leave one sentence but be held for another, transfer to MA DOC, enter federal or immigration custody, move to another state, or remain on a warrant or detainer. In a Nantucket County case, off-island transfer is common enough that disappearance from one custodian should never be labeled community release without a destination.
Ask every office for the release type and receiving agency along with the date. NPD may show local release or transfer to the Nantucket Sheriff. BCSO may show community release, court action, MA DOC transfer, or another handoff. DOC may distinguish parole from sentence expiration or discharge. The date alone cannot resolve those paths.
Confirm Nantucket Actual Release
Near the expected date, recheck the agency that has physical custody. For MA DOC, the official prison lookup route may show a current custody change, but it does not promise a public ERD field or a lasting discharged profile. A DOC release or discharge record supplies stronger confirmation.
The Nantucket County VINELink release check can register a notice for the correct MA DOC record. It does not cover NPD or BCCF. For local or county custody, call the proper office and preserve the result through a focused written request. Compare the record with the court disposition.
For a pickup or island return, verify the actual exit point as well as the time. A BCCF release occurs in Bourne, while a local release can occur at the police station or court. No official source promises transport to Hyannis, a ferry ticket, or a protected connection. Confirm custody, travel, and sailing status separately.
Note: A projected date supports planning, but only a completed government release record proves when and how custody ended.
